Construction for South Street Centre Apartments in downtown Frederick was celebrated on Wednesday, August 24th with a Groundbreaking Ceremony.
This 180,808 SF complex project will provide 96 homes for seniors and 56 homes for families. Two historic buildings will be renovated, and three new apartment buildings will be constructed. This 9%/4% twin Low-Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC) project was achieved through the shared commitment to affordable housing by Frederick County, the City of Frederick, and the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development.
The ceremony included a lineup of community and industry leaders that spoke on the success story of the project, as well as the importance of creating quality affordable housing in the Frederick Community. Speakers included Stephen Wilson, President-Principal of SCG Development; Jan Gardner, Frederick County Executive; Michael O’Connor, Frederick City Mayor; and Brien O’Toole with the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development.
“We are thrilled to start construction on these 152 new affordable homes in downtown Frederick,” said Steve Wilson, SCG Development president, “Providing access to areas of opportunity helps us break the cycle of poverty and we are so thankful to our many partners for joining us in this effort.”
Project Partners included Developer- SCG Development/New Harbor Development, The Housing Authority of the City of Frederick, The Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development, The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Morgan-Keller Construction, and Studio 343.
